Valir Guide: The Offensive Firebender

In homage to my favorite Avatar character Zuko, I decided to buy Valir in spite of him being overall lackluster, and even if I'm writing this guide, I still don't recommend y'all to use Valir in Ranked games. I only have <50% winrate on him, so feel-free to skip this guide if you don't have any plans of buying. Overall he's totally team-dependent.

Valir shines the most only if:

  • The enemy has >= 2 tanks, or fighters/initiators and relies on their charging to win games.
  • The enemy does NOT have >=2 assassins such as Fanny, Hayabusa, especially Saber. An exception would be Gusion, which Valir somewhat counters in a way. He can also reveal Natalia with his skills.
Why Valir?

  • You like burst mages with an extra layer of protection against ganks. The 2nd skill (Searing Torrent) knocks back enemies, which can CANCEL dashes such as Gusion's Fanny's cables, Akai's jump, and this saves your ass a lot.
  • You want to be a firebender like Zuko but not really courageous/durable enough to go melee so you focus on casting magic from afar.
  • You team up with a friend who can play fighters such as Sun, Freya, Zilong, Roger, Bane, Alpha decently. This teammate with you in the lane it will be easy to dominate.
  • You like using underused heroes and want to prove that EVERY HERO is good in the meta in spite of the kontol/anjings you will get for playing the hero.
Emblem to use:

Support Emblem - IMO this is my goto emblem for Mages with low Mobility such as Eudora and Aurora.

Focusing Mark
Focusing Mark (Increases damage dealt by allies 6%)
Agility 3/3 (Movement speed +6%)
Recovery 3/3 (16.00 Hybrid Regen)

I have it at Level 50, and this gives a max 10% Movement Speed which allows for outplay against aiming skills such as Lancelot. He's going to be a primary target for most assassins, so along with your 2nd skill this is necessary to catch them off-guard.

Item Build:

Kamikaze Fireball Build

Clock Of Destiny Arcane Boots Glowing Wand Holy Crystal Devil Tears Blood Wings

Blood Wings (flexible)

This build focuses on an Aurora-esque gameplay where you focus on the squishies such as Lesley and fire your combos at them. If they're Flicker is on cooldown, they are most likely dead even at full health. No CDR means your focus should be using the skills at the right time, and the results will be good if you do it right.

Clock of Destiny is important as a layer of protection so you don't die easily, and the stacks are valuable across the game. Games usually last more than 10 minutes now, so if Glowing Wand is built by then it gives you a total of 130 Magic Power. Holy Crystal increses this magic damage further, and if you're teamed up with a Ruby, Alpha, Tigreal, the results will be huge.

Burning Machine Build

Clock Of Destiny Magic Shoes Fleeting Time Necklace Of Durance Devil Tears Blood Wings

Necklace of Durance or Holy Crystal. Blood Wings (flexible)

While not as damage-oriented or impactful as the other build, the 20% CDR helps for anti-pushes when your team is at a disadvantage. If you can cast ulti more often this will help get you in the lategame for a comeback.

Skill Combos

Skill 1 for that 80% slow, Ulti > Skill 1 for more slow > Skill 2 to reposition enemies into the ulti radius. When laning save Skill 2 to cancel enemy dashes/blinks towards you.

Gameplay Tips

  • Lane with a fighter as much as possible. Doing this lets you do the most damage and may allow them to recall to base and give you an advantage.
  • Wait for your teammates to start the fight before using your ulti. Chances are if you cast ulti first, the enemies will just back away.
  • Join team fights and let your other teammates defend turrets in case of split pushes. This allows for early wins, casting ulti below their towers forces them to move back and helps your teammates to do the extra hits on them to destroy it.
  • Save your knockback skill for enemies who initiate, and don't waste your ulti on the enemy tanks.

That's about it for Valir, so thanks for reading this guide!
